My macbook won’t access the WD drive. When I plugged the WD in, the external hard drive turned on with the light (not flashing) but it did not show up in the desktop, disk utility. It worked fine last week, I don’t know what happened. Is there any possible way to access the file? My external hard drive is 1TB and used probably 500GB. I am having WD My passport Ultra (1tb) and its not recognized in any USB 3.0 ports, after initial one time! If I try my HDD in any USB 2.0 ports its recognized instantly. I tried reinstalling drivers from device manager, but same problem. PS: In WIN 7 OS, it gets recognized in all USB 3.0 ports as.
Repartition and reformat the WD external drive. The problem is likely due to someone improperly disconnecting it.

1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
2. After Disk Utility loads select the external hard drive (this is the out-dented entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the Disk Utility main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
For late versions of OS X you will find that the Disk Utility display is different. The Partition and Erase controls are icons in the Disk Utility toolbar, but they function much the same as in the older version.
